Workshop: Traditional Water Gilding
A Society of Gilders sanctioned class.
Previous experience in gilding is not required. All are welcome.
In this workshop, taught by frame-maker, Peter Miller in his Woodbury,
CT studio, students will learn about the materials, tools and
techniques required for traditional water-gilding. Students will learn
how to make and apply glue, gesso and bole. Each student will then
practice the skills required to properly surface those materials as
preparation to apply real gold leaf. Handling and transferring gold
leaf from book to surface will be taught as well as burnishing and
simple toning techniques.With the completion of this intensive study
and exploration, the student will come away with not only a gilded
frame, but also a comprehensive working understanding of the process. A
field trip to some of the antique shops in Woodbury may be offered to
explore gilded surfaces. Inns and B & B's are conveniently located
with in 2 miles of the studio. Please request information.
Each student will be supplied with an 10" x 12" cassetta style frame, the
materials and gold leaf required. Students have three options for
tools: use studio's students tools, use their own gilding tools or
purchase the Society of Gilders water gilding tool kit. Studio will not
supply gilder's cushions for student use.

Workshop: Restoration and Toning for Gilded Frames
A Society of Gilders sanctioned class.
The first segment of this intensive 5 day class will begin with a hands on exploration of the restoration of antique gilded frames.The class will then spend 2 days learning methods of toning and creating patinas on gilded surfaces. The student should have some experience working with frames and objects, and must have a working knowledge of water gilding and basic oil gilding. Frame makers and gilded restoration specialists Michael Gilbert and Peter Miller will explore with students the various materials and techniques used in the restoration of gilded frames, including surface examination, documentation, cleaning, repairing gesso, and ornament losses. Antique frames will be provided for students to examine and work on.
The toning of gilded surfaces segment of the class will provide each student with a solid foundation in toning and patination techniques. Students will learn how to use a variety of paint mediums, such as, casein, oils, watercolors, dry pigments, and waxes. Students will also experience chemical patination of silver leafed frames. For this section of the class, each student is asked to bring three 8" x 10" water gilded frames, one in silver leaf, and the other two in any karat weight gold leaf. The frames should have appropriately burnished areas. Short gilded lengths and corners of frames will be provided to the students for toning.
Tools and materials for distressing and toning will be available for student use during the class.

Presentation at Hill-Stead Museum
Peter H. Miller will host a walking tour and presentation of selected important frames at the Hill-Stead Museum in Farmington, CT. A frame-making and water gilding demonstration will follow the walking tour/presentation.
